The first ever Internet Week, organized with the aim to create one crore new internet users every year, finally concludes its Dhaka chapter. Jointly organized by Grameenphone, BASIS and ICT Division, the fair, held at Banani field, saw the participation of over 50 local e-commerce firms, web and app development companies and various other it service providers.
The event was inaugurated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday through live video streaming. In her speech, she highlighted the significant reduction in internet prices- down from a staggering Tk. 78,000 to a mere Tk.625/ Mbps. She also urged the telcos to reduce data prices simultaneously to further increase access to internet. ICT State Minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak expressed hope that over 50% of the population would soon be connected through broadband internet. After completion of the Dhaka round, the fair will resume on 9th September at Nanking Darbar Hall in Rajshahi followed by City indoor Stadium in Sylhet.
“The true potential of internet can be realized only through proper internet use.”
Music concerts were a special attraction of the fair aside from the IT related services and products. Moreover, on Sunday, national cricket team members Tamim Iqbal, Anamul Haque Bijoy and Taskin Ahmed visited the fair and asked the ICT State Minister several poignant questions regarding internet. Tamim Iqbal opined, “The true potential of internet can be realized only through proper internet use.”
The Internet festival will go on from 5th till 11th September in the Union Digital centers of 487 upazilas. Moreover, workshops, seminars in over 50 universities as well as 7 policy meetings with the media have been organized. Increasing the internet penetration rate to 1 crore new users each year, increasing the scope of online service provision to cater to the citizens as well as providing more benefits and facilitating internet and ICT based entrepreneurs, are some of the primary aims of this event.
